Twelve Practices to Nourish the Soul in Uncertain Times

In times of uncertainty, the tendency is often to grip tighter, control harder or fight against what is unfolding. Yet, as both Stoicism and Taoism remind us, peace lies not in resisting life but in aligning with it.

I recently came across a thoughtful article by Colin MacRae on his Substack: Ancient Wisdom Traditions & The Lost Art of Being. He offers twelve timeless practices to restore balance & reconnect with what matters most. Below, I’ve summarised them for you, with my reflections, as gentle reminders for your own journey.

🕊 The 12 Practices

  1. Pause Before Reacting
Create space between stimulus & response. In Stoic terms, freedom lies in choosing your response, not being owned by impulse.

  2. Accept What You Cannot Control
A cornerstone of both Stoicism and Taoism — recognise the difference between what belongs to you and what belongs to fate.

  3. Return to Silence
Find grounding in stillness. Silence sharpens perspective & restores inner clarity.

  4. Let Go of What No Longer Serves
Old habits, attachments & judgments weigh us down. Release them & make space for renewal.

  5. Practice Compassion
Lead with kindness - for yourself & others. Compassion disarms fear & builds connection.

  6. Live Simply
Reduce clutter - physical, emotional, mental. What remains will be more meaningful.

  7. Find Strength in Nature
Like Marcus Aurelius reminding himself to walk under the stars - nature steadies the soul.

  8. Embrace Change
Taoism teaches that change is the only constant. Flow with it, don’t resist.

  9. Express Gratitude Daily
Gratitude anchors you in the present & reframes challenges as opportunities.

  10. Seek Beauty
Notice the ordinary miracle of life around you - a sunrise, a kind word, the sound of laughter.

  11. Stay Curious
Curiosity keeps the mind supple & the heart open. In uncertainty, it transforms fear into learning.

  12. Cultivate Presence
Return to the only place life ever happens: this moment, here and now.

✨ Closing Reflection

These practices aren’t lofty ideals; they’re everyday choices. Whether facing personal trials or global uncertainty, they offer pathways back to balance, meaning, and grounded living.
