VUCA vs BANI

Just when you thought that the acronyms in the world couldn’t get worse I saw this discussion about how VUCA ‘is so last year’ & that we should now be focused on ‘BANI’.
Huh???? I was just beginning to wrap my head around VUCA.
Both are parts of the context of leadership & strategic planning & are used to help understand the challenges businesses, and I guess us individuals, face. VUCA focuses on a world that is shifting and complex while BANI describes a world that is increasingly chaotic and emotionally taxing.
VUCA - Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity
The VUCA framework helps leaders identify and respond to structured (if difficult) challenges.
Volatility: Rapid, unexpected changes in the environment
Uncertainty: A lack of predictability and clarity about future events
Complexity: A multitude of interconnected factors making situations hard to map
Ambiguity: Difficulty in interpreting the meaning of events or choosing between options
BANI - Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible
BANI is seen as a "reality check" for a world where traditional logic often fails.
Brittle: Systems that appear strong but are susceptible to sudden, catastrophic failure
Anxious: The emotional state of constant fear and urgency caused by lack of control
Nonlinear: Small changes leading to disproportionately large, unpredictable consequences
Incomprehensible: Outcomes that defy logical explanation, even when data is available
You don't necessarily have to choose one over the other. Use VUCA when you need to improve strategic agility and adapt to external market shifts. Use BANI when addressing emotional fatigue within a team or building long-term resilience against systemic "chaos".
Here’s to you in thinking into the future. I know I’m feeling a little BANI at the moment.
