You're not broken. You're gripping the wrong end of the rope

What the Enneagram's polarity reveals about why we stay stuck and what actually sets us free.
Most people come to the Enneagram hoping it will explain them to themselves. And it does - sometimes uncomfortably well. You recognise your pattern, you name your type and for a moment, everything makes sense.
Then nothing changes.
This is where polarity (and coaching) comes in; and in my mind, it changes everything about how we understand the Enneagram.
Every Enneagram type operates between two poles. Not good and bad. Not healthy and unhealthy. Two genuine expressions of the same energy, each with real value, each with real cost. The Type 1, for instance, moves between the drive for perfection and the ache of inadequacy. The Type 7 (Me!) swings between exhilarating possibility and the fear of being trapped in pain. The Type 9 oscillates between peaceful presence and invisible self-erasure.
The problem was never the poles themselves. The problem is the grip.
"When we lock onto one end - pursuing it relentlessly or desperately fleeing the other - we stop responding to life. We react to a story we've been telling ourselves since childhood"
The Stoics called the destination equanimity. The Taoists called it wu wei - effortless action, not from passivity but from being centred. The Enneagram polarity approach maps exactly this terrain: not which pole is right, but how to stop being pulled around by either of them.
This is not about becoming neutral. It's about becoming free. Free to access the full range of who you are, rather than spending your energy managing the part of yourself you've decided is unacceptable.
In my coaching work I see this shift happen, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly when clients stop trying to fix their type and start working with the polarity. The Enneagram stops being a label and becomes a living map.
Want to explore your own polarity?
I'm developing a course/method built specifically around this approach - designed for people who already know their type and are ready for what comes next. If that's you, get in touch. The conversation alone tends to be illuminating.
